The Cake

I have been going back and forth (and back and forth) on whether or not to do a 'friend' birthday for Silas. Family birthdays are cool and all, but he has two cousins in town and they are 8 and 14. So where as family birthday parties are fun, they're not as fun as having 25 screaming toddlers running around trying to hit a pinata with a bat.

I have considered the work that it takes to throw a big party for a three year old and that is what was on my 'con' list. But (BUT), we're taking the plunge and throwing some kids together to celebrate. Not a ton of kids, but enough kids to make it a party.

In honor of Silas' beloved cowboy boots I'm doing a cowboy/western theme. And I'm trying not to get all Martha Stewart on myself because that is borderline sinful.  Not really, but still.

I have a few cute ideas (that I've stolen from other peoples' blogs! I love you, Internet!) and want to make it as fun and Western and easy as possible. If I can pull it off without adding more gray hairs to my head it will be a success!

In any event, I am looking for a cake or a cake maker (professional or amateur!) I considered playing with fondant and trying to do it myself, but I have decided I am not confident enough. I've watched Youtube videos on how to work with fondant, looks easy, but I just know that I'll be up until 3am the night before the party (in tears...) trying to fix the cake.

SO...anyone out there know how to make something like this? Or know of a place where I can get something like this? Not as fancy is fine, maybe just a small, circle cow print cake? I will pay you!!! Or if you have any other fun cowboy ideas by all means. I'll take cupcakes instead if that's easier :)

Just thought I'd throw it out here before I totally lose hope.

Ahh, the cake. I ended up making the Octopus cake for Graham (at the top of our blog in pics) but it did take a lot of time. Have fun with the Western theme :-)

p.s. the best thing that worked for planning a bday party for us was this... Terry and Graham left the house for the afternoon the day before the party. So I had a solid 4-5 hours or so of JUST me at home. It was heaven and made everything come together awesome.

I will get you the name of a friend's bakery but it's in Edina...
Also, fondant doesn't taste very good despite looking really cool. I pride myself in being somewhat of a frosting snob - haha.
I'm sure the party will be really cute :)

One thing I heard you can do (or ask for) with fondant is... have the cake decorator put a layer of buttercream frosting underneath the fondant between the cake and the fondant. You can get the illusion of a fondant design and the taste of yummy buttercream frosting. (a friend that went to culinary school said that was a trick she learned).

We had Grant's cake made at Grandma's Bakery in White Bear Lake and they are awesome and can create anything. http://www.grandmasbakery.com/cakes.htm

However, they are spendy but my mother-in-law was buying and maybe that is the going rate for cakes anyway.

We are excited, thanks for adding stress to your life :)

PS- the table turned out awesome!
