Joe was gone all week doing high rise certification classes in Vegas. He got home late last night (Hallelujah!) When the kids woke up they jumped all over him and wrestled for the better part of the morning. Now they are all at the gym so I could take a shower and have some much needed recharging of the battery time.
Overall being a single parent for five days went okay. Only minor meltdowns. I made an effort to keep my self busy enough where I had stuff to look forward to, but not too busy where I was burned out by 4pm. And I think knowing that I wasn't going to get a break until they went to bed helped because then I was mentally prepared that I just had to plug through. Which I realize many parents do ALL THE TIME....single parents and parents whose spouse travels. I definitely hand it to you all who parent solo because it is no easy task!
The evenings were probably the loneliest, so I decided to tackle some things and cleaned out drawers, closets and cabinets and then hauled a few bags o' crap to Goodwill. I also made it to the gym more than usual because that whole 'break from the kids/free childcare' was that much more appealing. Turns out there were some benefits to having Joe gone after all!
The downfalls were that the children were definitely more ornery, and Silas had a harder time listening to me than normal. Veda took on the art of screaming, like horror movie scream, and I have no idea how to break her of that. I guess maybe this is just what it's like to raise a girl. And I was definitely more snappy and annoyed with the kids than usual. Some nights I went to bed wishing I would've handled certain situations better.
I feel like stuff like this happened all week. It was super annoying, but super funny at the same time:
Here is Veda stealing Silas' sock as he peacefully eating in his high chair. I realize he has two different socks on. I encourage him to dress himself and that is what happens :)
"Hey! VEDA!!!" She runs away with the sock and leaves Silas stuck and super annoyed. This was the third time it had happened. The first time Silas burst into tears. By the third time he was laughing with me!
And there she is taunting him with his missing sock. What a little rascal!
I went and got Silas' hair cut yesterday. Afterwards he got a sucker. I was paying and all of a sudden I hear Silas freak out and then Veda books it to the other end of the salon....with his sucker. She stole his sucker from his hand and ran as fast as she could the other way. The stylists were cracking up. See what I mean when I say it's both annoying and funny? This sort of thing happens with toys all the time. Silas will be playing with Lego's or blocks and Veda will take one out of his hand, or off of the tower he's building and run for her life.
My goal is to get them to play together.
