A few months back I took a knitting class at a little yarn shoppe downtown Stillwater. I learned the basics and the instructor got me started on making a baby hat. I worked on this hat off and on for a few weeks. I continued to mess up and not know how to fix it so the hat was really beginning to look messy. I didn't know how to properly decrease the knits and one hole after another I finally ended up cutting it off.
I talked to my friend, Rachel, who also took the class with me (and who also caught in a lot faster than I did!) and she suggested I use bigger needles and thicker yarn since it's more forgiving and you can accomplish a project in a matter of a few hours instead of a few weeks.
I had her give me a refresher course and yesterday I went out a got some yard and bigger needles. I was going to attempt a hat for Silas.
As he napped, I knitted.
And this is what I made:
I call it the acorn hat!
It's essentially worthless since it doesn't even cover his ears; but I think it's absolutely hilarious. Hilarious that he willingly wears it even though it barely stays on.
* I apologize, these pictures are taken from my phone....and Silas doesn't know how to sit still unless the television is on!
I didn't follow any sort of direction as far as the tassel/ball on the top goes, so it kind of just flops around which makes the hat even funnier. I should've believed Rachel when she told me to do 40 knits to make a toddler hat. It just looked way too small as I was starting the hat. But as we see 50 knits is way too big. I mean, maybe if I made the hat taller it wouldn't been something he could grow into (or that I could wear!) but now it's just too wide and too short.
After he went to bed last night I tried to redeem myself and attempted to knit an infant hat with the thick yarn. It's much, much better. Not good enough to give to someone as a gift, but we're moving in the right direction.

Awesome Ang! Good work :-) And, it'll get easier with time. I'm knitting my sisters birthday gift right now and it's been a lot of fun... hopefully a baby blanket will be in the lineup of winter projects.
Have fun with it!
p.s. I have found videos on You Tube to be super helpful. When I get to a word in a pattern that I don't understand or a part in the project that I don't understand I just hop on there and there are so many videos that walk you through the step (like decreasing stitches).
Ha! MAde me laugh out loud. :)
Awesome acorn hat! Good work...you're SO crafy!
