Grandma Sylvia

Today Veda got to meet her Great Grandma Sylvia.  I had been looking forward to this day.  Grandma is 96 years young and had been recently sick. We were all wondering if her time here on earth was nearing the end.  I selfishly hoped that Grandma would be able to meet Veda and sure enough she did!

Grandma couldn't figure out why we named our daughter Veda, but she did say she liked the name Esther (Veda's middle name.)  I told Grandma she could call Veda by her middle name and Grandma just told me that the name Veda would take some getting used to.

Here is Sylvia with her eldest daughter Nancy.

Like Nancy, Grandma is a barrel of laughs.  Still, at 96, Grandma cracks jokes and does her crossword puzzles.  Sylvia's hearing is 80% gone so speaking with her is difficult, but she did share with me some of her fondest memories of her children when they were young.

And here is Silas glued to Grandpa's lap.  As usual, we couldn't pray him away from his favorite person on earth.

There was a photo Grandma Sylvia showed us of my grandpa (her late husband, Jerry), my dad and me when I was about 5 months old.  Veda looks a lot like I did in that picture so we tried to reenact it here.  Silas wouldn't part from Grandpa's lap so we let him join in on the photo-fun as well!

I don't know how long Sylvia has left on this earth and seeing her today was a joy.  She is an amazing woman of God; always praying for her children, grandchildren and great great grandchildren and studying the Word.  I admire her in so many ways.  Her gentle spirit, her light sense of humor, her humility, her genuine love for people and the Lord.  A few weeks ago when she was very ill she asked us to pray that the Lord take her home.  What a hard prayer that was for me, but I know (as does she) that when it is her time to leave this earth she will be home, with the Lord, celebrating in heaven.  Ninety-six years on this earth I think I would be ready to meet my Creator as well.  We love you Grandma Sylvia!
