I have kind of given up on finishing the nursery.
Before I gave up I got these alphabet flashcards at Anthropologie for $15 and thought they'd be cute decor for above the crib. There is a vintage look to them and I love the assortment of pictures and colors. I busted out my level, measuring tape and some 3M Command Strips and went to town.
Now I feel like everything in the room is square. The crib is square, the curtains are square, the armoire is basically a big square, the flashcards are square, the rocking chair is a square shape, the magnetic window is square, that small chair in the corner (that may or may not stay in the room...) has a square shape. I am thinking I need some curves or circles in there. I tried making these pinwheel dealy things out of scrap book paper (seen on wall in picture below) They're pretty cute, but they looked too much like a 7y/o made them in art class. Any suggestions on putting some swirl in the room? I thought about getting some of those chinese lanterns and hanging them somewhere? (in the corner opposite of the big rocking chair? Or is that stupid for a nursery?) or hanging is circle or oval mirror (anyone know where to find a cheap one?). Maybe a circle or oval rug? The bumper has circular designs in it so I guess that helps. My brain is full of farts and I am at a loss as far as finishing the nursery.
The wall that isn't shown next to the big rocking chair has the armoire and magnetic window. The window wall is naked and the wall with the pinwheels on it now has the flashcards and will someday have a crib (can't wait!). The antique chair might get the boot. And I have two cute white shelves without a home that I may hang in there....somewhere?? If the crib folded like a Pack 'n' Play I would set it up in there just to see how it's all coming together, but unfortunately it would be an afternoon project for both Joe and me. No thanks! Not unless it promised to induce labor!

What about one of those funky floor lamps from ikea?

I don't think you need to worry about it being too square, from the pics it looks great! I love the alphabet cards. A cute way to add some roundness would be to change out the ceiling like fixture for something like this: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70190450
Super easy to do and pretty for the babe to look at!
What about tissue paper or fabric pom poms hanging from the ceiling at different heights? http://www.oncewed.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/hanging-pom-poms_4.jpg
I don't think lots of square is bad. You probably feel like it because you are thinking nursery design and staring it at... but once the crib is in there and the BABY is in there I have a feeling it won't feel so square. It probably just seems a little empty with those things missing ;-).
But if you do want to add some round, I think the idea of a round rug would be a good addition (like IKEA or Target or whatever). Otherwise, you can bring in some curves with a mobile (I should send you a pic of a mobile that I am borrowing to consider using)... it's like a spiral down and the things hang from different parts of the spiral.
otherwise you could print off some letters from the computer that are real script-like and write something (like baby's name or something sweet) on the wall... or I know they have the sayings at Target and other places that are scripted messages that can be swirl-like, something like - chilren are a gift or something sweet like that. you could do that above the rocking chair or above the window. another idea is to get a couple of pictures frames and to put them on the wall in an arch... or maybe you could put the flashcards on the wall in an arch *but I think they look good the way they are.
Just a few thoughts.
come on baby, can't wait to meet her!
You guys are good! THANKS!
Never heard of the hanging pom pom's, K...but I like :)
I made some tissue paper poms for baby's nursery in navy, orange and white. Super easy to make (and cheap) and I can show you some time when you're over-I just haven't hung them yet. Lots of online tutorials on how to make them or let me know if you want me to send you a link!
