Yesterday was Silas's 18 month WCC
33 1/2 inches (75%). 26 1/2 lbs (60%)
His body is catching up with his head...his head is only in the 90% instead of the usual 98% :-)
He is doing lots of fun things these days. Although he is in the full blown tantrum phase I still do think life is easier now that he is fully mobile and able to (somewhat) communicate and reason with. Joe and I often talk about how difficult Silas's first 10 months were and how we'd rather deal with a tantrum than have to go through the reflux, breast feeding fiasco, sensitive digestive system, screaming in the car, up every two hours at night, not understanding 'no' phases :)
Contentment is key to a happy home!
Like I said, 18 months has proven to be a very fun and happy time. Silas is....
- changing every day, I swear. I put him to bed at night and as I rock him I study his peaceful face. I kiss his forehead and lay him down and by the next morning, without fail, he looks older. He looks like a real kid and not a baby. It's both scary and fascinating at the same time.
- obsessed with being outside. Rain or shine, day or night. He hands me his shoes, lifts his feet for me to put them on and heads to the door. He likes to run around in the grass (except in the morning when it's wet with dew--he freaks out when his shoes get wet! And yes that's how early we're up and playing outside.), push his stroller from the basket in the back since he obviously can't reach the handle, whip around an old fishing pole, haul empty gas cans, play in my car, collect sticks, climb on the jet ski trailer and go up and down the deck stairs. And when it's time to go inside he cries.
- singing and dancing. He has been dancing for quite some time now, but he has learned to sing along to a few songs that he hears from music class or that Joe sings to him. He requests them in the car and it's fun to watch and listen to him sing along, but at the same time it's taxing to hear 'Trot Old Joe' on repeat!
- getting very independent. He usually plays really well by himself whether it's with match box cars or unsharpened pencils. He can entertain himself for a pretty good chunk of time. He really enjoys a good challenge. He will spend a lot of time transferring blocks from one box to the other, or taking out everything from under the sink and handing it to me. He gets real serious and sticks his tongue in his cheek when he's working hard - just like Grandpa Jon :-)
- still hates to sit still. The high chair, shopping cart, car seat and stroller are NOT his favorite things. We have kind of reentered the anti-high chair phase again :( Often times we have to put him in there while he's kicking and crying, but once he takes a bite of food he usually does okay. As for the shopping cart-it's hit or miss. I usually bring a snack for him so he is occupied, but often times our shopping trips get cut short because he'd rather push the cart than sit in it. Today our trip to Target was down right embarrassing. I try avoid stroller rides altogether unless he has a snack or there are a lot of things for him to see (the State Fair!).
- taking one long nap a day, usually around 3hrs. It works great for me because I can both get some things done around the house and rest myself! He usually gets up around 7am and talks to himself in his crib for about 15 minutes before he requests (yells) to get out. Depending on when he gets up he normally goes down for a nap around 11:30 or 12pm. And is in bed a little after 8pm.
- saying about 25 words with a few phrases in there...'I love you' being my favorite one! He will also copy us if we ask him to say something, which is super cute. It's been fun watching his vocabulary take off and seeing how he makes connections with words and objects. The other day we were on an evening walk and he pointed to the moon and said, 'Balloon!'.
- becoming observant! He sees Joe rub my shoulders and so if I'm sitting on the floor Silas will come up behind me, put his hands on my shoulders and squeeze. I melt every time :) He mimics what we do and even likes to throw his own dirty diaper away. I am sensing a good diaper helper for when baby girl arrives.... He is also noticing my growing belly. I explained to him that there is a baby in there and asked him to kiss my belly. He kissed it, but seemed pretty confused :-)
- still sleeping in his crib. His bed set up in his room right next to his crib, but I don't think he's ready. And honestly, I am not willing to give up the peace during nap time and at night to attempt a switch yet. His pediatrician suggested to wait until he's 2 or until he can climb out of his crib.
- a good helper. He loves to help with chores-- he will get right next to me and want to participate with everything. Cleaning the house while he's awake often tests my patience!!
- getting into typical little boy humor. He thinks that anything falling is the funniest thing alive. He will push his trucks off of the coffee table and crack up as they crash on the ground. Or he will run into couch and start to laugh so hard he falls on the floor. It's the sort of humor I don't quite understand, but goodness, it's so fun watching him and listening to his deep gut laugh!
- a snuggler! He wasn't a stiff infant, but he was pretty squirmy so snuggling usually only happened when he was sleeping, eating or very tired. Now he is usually on the go, but when he is relaxed he loves to snuggle, especially if his blankie is in hand. I am lucky to get lots of snuggles and hugs through the day.
- allergic to dairy. So we think. We took him off all dairy for one week and things seemed to be getting better. We slowly reintroduced formula one scoop at a time. He did okay for the most part, but still his poops were ( I'll spare you the details and just say...) 'off'. So now we're going two weeks no dairy and lots of probiotics. And if that doesn't cure the issue we'll look into it maybe being a gluten allergy. He doesn't necessarily seem fussier or whinier when these 'off' poops occur, which is great, but still....something isn't right and I would like it figured out for everyones' sake!
- (disclaimer: we normally don't let him use balloons as pillows)

Silas, our sweet little Booper- thank you for all of your sweet, sweet love! This past year and a half with you have been a delight. We love you!!
