I got this adorable twin bed for Silas at a garage sale a few months back. I am having an incredibly hard time trying to figure out when to do the switch. I am losing sleep over this issue and I'm not sure if that's a normal anxiety or if it's the pregnancy that is tripping me up.
For one, I can't imagine my baby in a bed. He's my baby and I still rock him to sleep. Out of all the milestones nothing has bothered me yet. He crawled and walked and said words and ate food and is becoming mildly independent and I think it's all great. It has been fun for me to watch him grow up. But this whole bed thing is killing me. I may cry when he transfers into the big bed.
Now, besides the sentimental aspect of it, when do I move him?
Baby Girl is schedule to arrive when Silas is 21 months and some of me thinks to keep him in the crib while she is in the bassinet in our room to make as little change as possible for him. Then a few months (or if it's up to my husband, a few weeks) later snatch his crib away and give it to his baby sister? Or do I do the switch a few months before she arrives (meaning he'll be in that big bed at 19 months, yikes!) so the big change has already been made and he would've forgotten about it by the time new baby sister arrives. Sounds easy, but remember, he can escape a bed easily and I'm not sure that at 19 months he'll understand to stay in the bed until the sun comes up! At 17 months he flips and flops all over his crib during the night and once in a while he'll whimper in bed in the middle of the night.
For nesting and selfish reasons I would like the crib in Baby Girls room before she arrives so I can see the room all put together. I know that in the big picture that doesn't really matter.
And option D -we can have a big family bed and call it a night!
Any tips for the transition process??

* Putting a second coat on the YELLOW nursery walls made a huge difference. I actually genuinely like it now.
* Aunt Gwennie is helping me make the baby's bedding next week. She invited me over to look at some craft magazine she got in the mail and I asked if she'd help me with the bedding and she jumped all over it!

Awesome! I've been reading up on tutorials because I'm pretty sure I'm going to make Baby Wing's bedding. I'll have to ask you some questions on how it comes together.
On the bed thing, I'll be curious what other mom's say. Good questions!
Hey Angel, I read your blog and regarding your recent post on bedroom anixety, we moved Courtney to a toddler bed at 15 months!!! a little early, maybe, but like you, we had the same anticipation with baby #2 on the way. granted she is an active sleeper as well and there are times when we have to adjust her a couple times a night, she LOVES her BIG GIRL BED!!! she reads there, sings in bed, and lays with all her animals. we shut the door to her room so she can't wander around the house if she wakes up but we just hear her in the monitor. our biggest worry now is that she has figure out how to twist doorknobs open but we hear her by then!!! i know what you mean about our babies growing so fast!!! they are like KIDS!!! but just think, you and i both get to do it all over again when the second one arrives. i say, make the adjustment now!! we also got rid of bottles and she is almost potty trained but i am ok on waiting on that just a bit cause i can't handle washing LOADS of clothes!! let me know how it goes!
Thanks, Tanna! We may be on our way into a big boy bed here soon..eek! We're almost done with bottles (I feel like whenever I gear up to get rid of it he gets sick and I feel bad ) and potty training seems so far off to me :) I feel like Courtney is so mature for her age, too. Thanks for the advise!!!
Amy, I'll let you know how the bedding goes. Gwennie says it's fairly easy!
I moved Audrey to a big girl bed at 18 months....I kept both set up in her room for a week or so. She napped in the bed and went to sleep in the crib. After 3 days she was over the crib and as slept every night in her bed since then. Also - if you're interested. I purchased a bed side rail thing that she no longer uses. It is in great shape and if you'd like it you can have it. Otherwise I'll just post to Craigslist or take it to Once Upon a Child. Let me know if you're interested and good luck, Silas will do great!
Kristy, that's funny b.c I was thinking about setting up the bed in his room and making the switch happen with both the crib and the bed in his room. AS of now, he is just interested in jumping on the bed :) I feel like girls are so much more mature when it comes to doing 'big kid' things. But we'll see. I refuse to buy another crib!!
Is your bedside rail girly? :) If it's neutral I'll buy it from you! I was going to pick one up at babies r us soon anyway.
Thanks for the tips!
Nope, its just a tan color. You can see it in the background of this picture on my facebook http://www.facebook.com/KristeyLou#!/photo.php?pid=31394681&id=1106647153&ref=fbx_album&fbid=1465645916919 It worked wonders, she never once fell out!
