Yesterday I decided last minute to paint the kitchen a color called Powell Buff. I found some paint in the basement that the previous owners had and went to town. Joe was watching the USA vs Canada hockey game with his friends and Silas was content roaming the house with a spatula.
I never really liked the color of the kitchen when we moved in. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. Over time I began to hate it. It is actually a decent color, as far as colors go, but it's just not me. And not a color I would pick for my kitchen--too drab. I have wanted to brighten things up and make it more my own for a while. I guess yesterday seemed like a good day to tackle that!
My good friend at Re:fresh design studio suggested I do a neutral color and spice it up with pops of color through accessories.
(Top is the old color, bottom is the new)
The broken light is what inspired the whole idea. She suggested to replace the leopard print with something brighter. Brilliant! I have been looking at some design blogs to get (cheap) ideas for the rest of the kitchen. I haven't come up with anything genius, but have found some cute things along the way.
I have also found that painting a kitchen isn't easy. The three coats to cover the dark brown/orange was fine, but cutting in above the cabinets in impossible. I keep on nicking the ceiling and it's driving me crazy. The toddling one year old roaming around the house makes it a little trickier, too.
I shut all of the doors to rooms and let him roam as I stand on the counter with a wet brush while saying, "Are you being a good boy?" It wasn't long before I decide to wait until he went down for a nap.
Since I can't seem to do a good job I called my old employer to see if he's still in the business. Yes, I used to paint! Nate is still in action. He has GOT to be close to 80yrs old, not kidding! He's coming over on Wednesday to check it out and give me a bid.
I'm honestly not in love with the color for the whole kitchen and kitchenette. I may have Nate paint two of the walls by the kitchen table something different. All I know is that I have a baby's birthday party to throw on Saturday so let's hope Nate can, as he would say, knock it out fast! If things don't work out with Nate I know a friend who hired a illegal alien to paint their house for a few bucks :)
